Hello community. It’s been a while since we provided an update on the Town Center.
Over the past few years, the City has been working to update the zoning and municipal code at the Town Center to align community interests with potential redevelopment opportunities. This was spurred by Sound Transit’s intent to place a parking garage at the Town Center as part of the Bus Rapid Transit expansion. As the Town Center property owner, our team has provided relevant feedback to help move the process towards a successful outcome.
We know that many of you participated in the process, sharing your thoughts and vision for the Town Center as the heart of Lake Forest Park. Like you, we have been waiting for the City Council to provide a comprehensive document reflecting their intended direction for the Town Center. We have been open and transparent with City Council, the Planning Commission, and Town Center neighbors about the issues with the City’s proposed land use code revisions. In that spirit, we are sharing a letter we submitted last week in response to the City’s Draft Town Center Code.
Unfortunately, our conclusion is that, despite our feedback, and given the timeline that the City is pushing for, the code as proposed will not result in redevelopment of the Town Center. We will continue to work with our existing and future tenants to provide a grocery and pharmacy anchored neighborhood retail center here at the Town Center. The incorporation of housing (affordable and market rate), open space, enhanced sustainability measures and all of the associated public benefits, will not come to fruition based on the code that has resulted from this process.
